Ingredients

Scale

Apple Pie Filling

  • 3 lbs (1.4 kg) apples, peeled, cored, & sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon boiled cider (optional)

Pie Crust

  • Single Pie Crust Recipe, chilled (enough for a 9-inch pie plate)

Crumble Topping

  • 1/4 cup (57 grams) butter, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup (66 grams) brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup (60 grams) old fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup (40 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Additional

  • Milk, for brushing pie crust edges
  • 1/2 cup (280 grams) caramel sauce, warmed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a medium bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and boiled cider if using. Stir until apples are evenly coated. Set aside.
  2. Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, beat the room temperature butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Stir in oats, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until mixture is uniform. Set aside.
  3. Roll out pie crust: On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled pie dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer it to a 9-inch pie plate, folding edges under and pressing to create a decorative border.
  4. Assemble the pie: Pour the prepared apple filling into the crust, mounding the apples in the center. Break the crumble topping into small pieces and sprinkle evenly over the apples.
  5. Prepare for baking: Brush the exposed crust edges with milk to promote browning. Place the pie in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C).
  6. Bake the pie: Bake for 55 to 60 minutes until the crumble topping and crust are golden brown. If edges brown too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil to prevent overbaking.
  7. Cool before serving: Allow the pie to cool at least 3 hours, letting the filling set properly for clean slices.
  8. Serve: Drizzle 1-2 tablespoons of warm caramel sauce over each slice before serving. Pair with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • To prevent the crust edges from over-browning, tent with foil halfway through baking if necessary.
  • For a vegan version, substitute dairy-free butter and plant-based milk for brushing, and use a vegan caramel sauce.
  • Cool the pie completely before slicing to ensure the filling sets and slices cleanly.
  • Boiled cider is optional but adds a deeper apple flavor; it can be omitted or substituted with apple cider vinegar for slight tang.
  • Serving the pie warm with vanilla ice cream elevates the dessert experience.
