4.8 from 52 reviews

A comforting and classic green bean casserole made with creamy mushroom soup, tender green beans, and crispy fried onions, perfect for holiday dinners and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Green Bean Casserole

  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup (cream of chicken works well too)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 5 (14.5 ounce) cans green beans, drained
  • 23 cups French fried onions (such as French’s)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a 13×9 inch baking dish, thoroughly mix together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, and the drained green beans until evenly coated.
  3. Bake the mixture: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 25 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the casserole to heat through.
  4. Add topping: Remove the casserole from the oven and evenly sprinkle 2 to 3 cups of French fried onions over the top.
  5. Final bake: Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes to crisp and brown the onions.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Remove from oven, let cool slightly, then serve. Leave a rating and comment to share your feedback and help the recipe improve.

Notes

  • This recipe can be made ahead of time and refrigerated before baking; add the fried onions just before the final baking step.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute cream of chicken soup for the mushroom soup.
  • Use fresh green beans if preferred, but adjust cooking time accordingly to ensure they are tender.
  • Adding soy sauce enhances umami but can be omitted for a less salty version.
  • This casserole can be doubled easily for larger gatherings.
