This Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf is a delicious twist on the traditional meatloaf, combining the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak sandwich with a hearty meatloaf base. Ground beef is seasoned and baked with sautéed peppers, onions, and melty provolone cheese inside and on top, creating a flavorful and comforting meal perfect for dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meatloaf:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Cheesesteak Filling:

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (4 for filling, 4 for topping)

Optional Garnish:

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the meatloaf.
  2. Sauté vegetables: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced green bell pepper and onion, sauté for 5 minutes or until softened. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare meat mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  4. Form bottom layer: Press half of the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of a loaf pan to form the base layer of the meatloaf.
  5. Add filling: Layer 4 slices of provolone cheese over the bottom meat layer, then evenly spread the sautéed peppers and onions on top of the cheese.
  6. Top and seal: Add the remaining meat mixture on top, pressing the edges gently to seal all layers together neatly.
  7. Bake meatloaf: Place the loaf pan in the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of baking, lay the remaining 4 slices of provolone cheese on top of the meatloaf and continue baking until the cheese melts completely.
  8. Rest before serving: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. This helps the juices redistribute and makes slicing easier. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired before serving.

Notes

  • Use a lean ground beef (85% lean) for best flavor and texture.
  • Make sure to rest the meatloaf before slicing to prevent it from falling apart.
  • You can substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or another mild melting cheese.
  • If you prefer a spicier version, add some crushed red pepper flakes to the meat mixture or sautéed veggies.
  • Breadcrumbs can be substituted with gluten-free breadcrumbs to make the recipe gluten-free.
