Ingredients

Scale

Cake Layer

  • 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix (prepared as per box instructions)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

Cream and Toppings

  • 16 oz whipped cream (store-bought or homemade)
  • 22 oz caramel syrup
  • 8 oz Heath English Toffee Bits
  • 1 King-Sized Heath bar, crushed for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Follow the box instructions to bake the Devil’s Food cake, typically mixing with eggs, water, and oil, then baking at specified temperature until moist and cooked through. Let cool slightly.
  2. Cut the Cake into Squares: While warm but no longer hot, cut the cake into small, bite-sized squares to maximize absorption of the sweetened condensed milk.
  3. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake squares, ensuring all pieces soak up the creamy milk. Let it sit a few minutes for full absorption.
  4. First Layer in the Trifle Bowl: Place one-third of the soaked cake evenly into the bottom of a trifle bowl to create a solid base.
  5. Add Whipped Cream, Caramel, and Toffee: Spread one-third of the whipped cream over the cake layer, drizzle one-third of the caramel syrup evenly atop the cream, and sprinkle a generous layer of Heath English Toffee Bits over the caramel.
  6. Repeat Layers: Repeat the layering two more times with cake, whipped cream, caramel syrup, and toffee bits to build three total layers.
  7. Top with Crushed Heath Bars: Crush the King-Sized Heath bar into small pieces and scatter evenly over the top layer of whipped cream and toffee bits for added crunch and flavor.
  8. Refrigerate: Cover the trifle bowl with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to let the layers set and flavors meld before serving.

Notes

  • Use a moist chocolate cake for best results; homemade or other chocolate cake mixes can be substituted.
  • For a lighter option, substitute whipped cream with low-fat or non-dairy versions.
  • Caramel sauce can be swapped with chocolate syrup for a twist on the traditional flavor.
  • Heath bars can be replaced with Skor bars or other toffee-covered chocolate candies.
  • Cutting the cake while warm helps the condensed milk soak in better for a more luscious texture.
  • Chill the trifle longer if you prefer more integrated flavors and firmer layers.
